The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and TruStage are thrilled to announce the return of the Carolinas Cup Golf Championship & Auction , taking place October 4–6, 2026, at the beautiful Grandover Resort & Spa in Greensboro, North Carolina. Now in its 22nd year, the Carolinas Cup continues its tradition of bringing together credit union professionals from across North and South Carolina for a weekend of competitive golf, networking, and charitable giving.

This year’s event will once again benefit Victory Junction, a year-round camp facility providing life-changing experiences for children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions at no cost to their families. The camp operates solely on generous contributions and donations.

Over the last 22 years, the Carolinas Cup has raised nearly $1.4 million to benefit Victory Junction, topping the more than $4 million raised through that same period by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.

This year’s returning captains include Greenville FCU CFO Phil Barhill of South Carolina and Skyla CU VP of Financial Solutions Frank DeDonato of North Carolina. Team SC is the current Carolinas Cup Champion, having taken the Cup in a thrilling and hard-fought finish from Team NC, who had multiple winning years. Last year’s Carolinas Cup raised an impressive $114,000 for Victory Junction.

The weekend begins on Sunday, October 4, with an optional practice round for those eager to warm up their swing, followed by an evening give-back activity with Victory Junction, dinner on-site at the hotel, followed by some competitive games. The tournament officially kicks off on Monday, October 5, with a shotgun start and a full day of golf, camaraderie, and competition. Monday evening will feature a lively dinner and live auction, with exciting items up for bid—all in support of Victory Junction’s life-changing work. The event wraps up on Tuesday, October 6, with a final round of golf, closing luncheon, and an awards ceremony to celebrate the winning teams and sponsors.

Registration is open now, with individual golfer packages priced at $800, which includes two days of golf, meals, entertainment, and hospitality. For those who wish to join but not participate in the golf tournament, there are flexible options including a $250 package for volunteers or spouses and a $200 ticket for the auction and dinner only.

There are also a variety of sponsorship opportunities available for credit unions and business partners looking to increase their visibility while supporting a great cause. Sponsorship levels range from the $8,000 VIP Camper package, which includes golf for four, VIP perks and exclusive recognition, to the $2,000 Adventure Seeker level.

Through its partnership with Vizo Financial Corporate Credit Union, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation awarded $50,000 in Vizo Financial Empowerment Grants to ten credit unions earlier this month. Each credit union received funding to amplify their financial education programs, with an end goal of empowering members to reach financial goals.  This year’s grants ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 per credit union.

“It’s been inspiring to witness both the growth and impact credit unions in the Carolinas are making through the Financial Empowerment Grants program,” shared VP of Administration for Vizo Financial, Erin Doan. “We’re grateful for our partners at the Carolinas Foundation for their important stewardship and support of the grant program.” 

Now in its third year, the Vizo Financial Empowerment Grants program saw record demand for grants, as a total of 13 credit unions completed applications for projects totaling nearly $97,000. This demand follows a strong 2025, as credit unions amplified youth outreach, increased access to financial education tools, and promoted member saving habits through a matched savings program.

“What began as a $10,000 investment through the Vizo Financial Empowerment Grant in 2025 has become something much larger than we ever imagined,” said Acclaim FCU President and CEO, Christie Smith. “Today, that investment has helped create 100 active youth savings accounts that have collectively grown to nearly $75,000 in savings, while also creating positive and lasting relationships with banking for children and families throughout our community.”

“Stories like Christie’s show the lasting impact of the Financial Empowerment Grants,” Carolinas Credit Union Foundation President and CEO, Lauren Whaley reflected. “We look forward to seeing the impact our 2026 awardees will have on the lives of members, as well as the communities these credit unions are serving. We are deeply grateful to Vizo Financial for their continued funding of this program.”

The 2026 Vizo Financial Empowerment Grant winners 

Acclaim Federal Credit Union received $10,000 to fund Level Up Banking: Learn. Earn. Build. The grant supports a simple, structured pathway that encourages individuals to open an account, establish direct deposit, and complete financial education through Zogo. Participants earn incentives as they build their first $100 in savings, reinforcing positive financial behaviors.

Upon completion, participants unlock access to a $300 credit-building loan, allowing them to apply what they have learned while establishing or strengthening credit. Acclaim will match the $10,000 grant, doubling the program’s reach across all branches. This grant is focused on a new branch in a former banking desert in Rockingham County, NC that Acclaim expanded to serve recently.

Edisto Federal Credit Union received $1,000 for the purchase of financial education materials to assist the credit union in its member and community outreach efforts.

First Carolina People's Credit Union received $1,000 for the purchase of financial education materials to assist the credit union in its member and community outreach efforts.

Greenville Federal Credit Union received $10,000 to fund and/or match savings accounts for those who attend financial education delivered by Greenville Federal Credit Union in partnership with local charitable organizations.  Participants will be included from five current community partners, with all participants falling below the ALICE threshold for the Upstate SC region. ALICE stands for Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed. Families who fall under the ALICE threshold find saving money difficult. In addition, they are often at most risk of a family emergency undermining a budget for an extended period of time.  Without emergency savings, they may turn to predatory lenders to cover expenditures or take pay advances against future pay through programs offered by their employers, thus extending the emergency financial repercussions.

NC Community Federal Credit Union received $10,000 for the creation of a Mobile Escape Room to Promote Financial Literacy. The project includes creating a fully-immersive, commercial-grade mobile escape room that turns financial literacy into an engaging, hands-on adventure. Built inside a climate-controlled trailer and engineered with high-volume durability, the experience will immerse participants in realistic banking challenges that teach budgeting, credit, fraud awareness and more through interactive game play. More than just entertainment, this will be a powerful community outreach tool for teaching financial literacy.

Emergency Responders Credit Union received $5,000 to further amplify a financial education video series tailored specifically to emergency responders. Initially funded through a 2025 Financial Empowerment Grant, this initiative expanded Emergency Responders’ impact by partnering with Family Protection to deliver in-person financial education at police, fire, and EMS stations local to the credit union.  As the only credit union in North Carolina that exclusively serves emergency responders, ERCU is uniquely positioned to address the financial challenges faced by first responders. Grant funds will allow the credit union to reach more departments statewide through in-person financial counseling, enhanced educational resources, and expanded distribution of its take-home financial video series.

Fort Bragg Federal Credit Union received $5,000 to support the efforts of the Skyward Youth Advisory Council to support a hands-on financial educational initiative to empower and equip students and their families, especially those from underserved areas, with knowledge, tools, and confidence to build strong financial futures.

Many students in the credit union’s service area face barriers to financial success, including limited access to financial education, low FAFSA college financial aid application completion rates, and a lack of exposure to banking systems and wealth-building tools. Without intervention, these gaps can lead to long term financial instability.

The Skyward Youth Advisory Council directly addresses these challenges by combining financial literacy education with real-world application and family engagement. The grant will support ongoing financial education as well as a Family Financial Literacy Night. 

HealthShare Credit Union received $3,000 to purchase five Balance Financial Workshops for member education. Each workshop kit will provide the PowerPoint deck, trainers guide and member handouts. These workshops will further enhance the credit union’s financial education program.

REV Federal Credit Union received $2,500 to support the development, implementation, and launch of two age-appropriate checking account products for youth and young adults: Youth Checking (ages 8–15) and Teen & Young Adult Checking (ages 16–24). Grant funds will help offset development and implementation costs and support product features such as fee refunds and tiered dividends that reward consistent saving and sustained account use.

For Youth Checking, REV plans to partner with a third-party provider to offer a controlled digital banking experience that builds core money skills through hands on practice. Built in tools will include savings goals, reward-based allowances tied to chores, and parent/guardian controls such as spending notifications and limits. These products will give young members safe, practical tools to build savings habits, gain confidence managing money, and establish a strong foundation early on.

Revity Federal Credit Union received $2,500 to purchase the BALANCED Life Classroom Simulation. Revity works with a local high school in an underserved area, providing financial education information on an ongoing basis. The ability to bring the interactivity of the BALANCED Life simulation to the classroom would not only provide students with much needed real-life situations but also allow Revity to easily expand this program to other underserved high schools in the area.

The BALANCED Life simulation is an ideal fit for both the school and the credit union since the need for volunteer support is greatly reduced in comparison to other simulations.

Stories of community impact, equity, disaster response, financial empowerment, and decades of dedicated service to the credit union movement filled the room as the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation welcomed more than 300 attendees to its Annual Awards Gala on February 11, 2026, held in conjunction with the Carolinas Credit Union League's LAUNCH Conference. It was more than an event; it was a powerful reminder of who the credit union movement is and what it can accomplish together.

Coastal Credit Union's Chief Community Impact and Public Affairs Officer, Creighton Blackwell, returned as emcee for the evening, ushering attendees through an inspiring program that celebrated the best of the "People Helping People" philosophy across North and South Carolina. Moments were shared, partnerships were strengthened, and our collective purpose was renewed.

A new award for an unprecedented year

One of the evening's most meaningful moments came with the debut of the Disaster Response Champions Award, a new category created to recognize credit unions that responded swiftly and selflessly when their communities needed them most. Award recipients Spero Financial, State Employees' Credit Union, SRP Federal Credit Union, and Truliant Federal Credit Union were honored for embodying the cooperative spirit at its highest level in the face of disaster.

Hero Awards honorees

The Foundation's Hero Awards recognized four outstanding honorees whose contributions to the movement extend far beyond their own institutions.

The Southern Regional Chapter (SRC) of the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) was honored with the Advancing Equity Award for its transformative work advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion across ten southern states since its founding in 2018.

The James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation and Summit Credit Union received a Partner in Philanthropy Award for their commitment to small credit union development through the Hamilton Professional Development Grant Fund, which has committed more than $230,000 to support professional growth across the Carolinas, continuing the legacy of visionary leader Elizabeth "Sis" Hamilton, who devoted seven decades to the movement.

The Philanthropy Summit, a collaboration led by the Coastal Credit Union Foundation, Civic Foundation, and SECU Foundation, was also recognized with a Partner in Philanthropy Award for four years of equipping nonprofit leaders with the tools, connections, and resources needed to achieve long-term sustainability.

Sandy Milton, chief operations officer at Piedmont Advantage Credit Union, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for more than four decades of service, including nearly 29 years at Truliant Federal Credit Union and 12 years at Piedmont Advantage, marked by a career-long commitment to mentoring, collaboration, and strengthening the credit unions and communities around her.

The evening also recognized excellence across the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility, Louise Herring Philosophy in Action, and Desjardins Adult and Youth Financial Education, award categories. These awards, first established by America’s Credit Unions in 1987, celebrate outstanding efforts in community service, financial education, and the integration of credit union philosophy into everyday operations.

The Award Gala honorees celebrated included 26 recipients, each recognizing credit unions that go above and beyond to uplift communities, empower members, and advance financial well-being across the Carolinas. Credit unions and chapters honored in these categories include Acclaim FCU, Carolina Foothills CU, Central SC Chapter of Credit Unions, Coastal CU, Family Trust FCU, Greenville FCU, Latino Community CU, Piedmont Advantage CU, REV FCU, Skyla CU, SPC CU, Spero Financial FCU, SRP FCU, Summit CU, Telco Community CU, and Truliant FCU.

Spotlighting the Foundation’s impact

During the evening, Carolinas Credit Union Foundation President Lauren Whaley highlighted the collective philanthropic impact of the Foundation across the region. Over the past 18 months, the Foundation distributed a record $3.1 million in grants, scholarships, disaster relief, and community programs supporting credit unions, employees, and nonprofit partners throughout the Carolinas. From hurricane recovery efforts to advancing financial inclusion and education, and supporting small credit unions, the Foundation’s work continues to strengthen communities and improve the lives of credit union members. The Awards Gala serves as the Foundation’s signature fundraising event, helping make this impact possible through the generosity of sponsors and supporters.

Nine professionals from the Carolinas earned their designation as Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs). The new DEs included six graduates from the February class held in Tampa, as well as three professionals who completed the virtual DE session in December. CUDE is a program of the National Credit Union Foundation and builds awareness of the 12 development issues that prevent people from achieving financial freedom—and how credit unions are uniquely positioned to address them. More than 3,000 people from over 35 countries have graduated from the U.S. DE program since its launch in 1982.

Representing the Carolinas in the December 2025 DE Class were:

Henderson, Kuriger and Warwick capped off a surge of new DE designations in 2025. A total of 20 credit union professionals from the Carolinas became DEs, including four scholarship recipients. Looking ahead through the rest of year, the remaining four in-person DE sessions are sold out, but space remains for the virtual DE sessions scheduled in November – December. Scholarships support Carolinas CUDEs

Eligible credit union professionals in the Carolinas can attend DE courtesy of the Foundation’s Development Educator Scholarship Fund, supported in part by annual earnings from the Principles & Philosophy Conference. Carolinas credit union professionals who attend the conference may apply for scholarships to attend DE training. Applications are accepted from June 1 – August 15 each year, with scholarship awardees announced in October.  Additionally, DEs are now eligible to apply for scholarship support to complete their ICUDE designations.

As mentioned above, Ashley Beach Reid (African American CU Coalition), Josh Farmer (Mountain CU), and Sarah Johnson Blackwell (Truliant FCU) received scholarships and attended DE in Tampa. I am deeply grateful to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation for the scholarship to participate in the Credit Union Development Education (CUDE) Program as a South Carolina credit union professional who has the opportunity to serve the industry through my role at the African-American Credit Union Coalition. 

Becoming a CUDE has been a desire of mine for over a decade. Through this experience, I was reminded of the origin of our movement—individuals who chose to stand in the gap for those who were underserved and overlooked. It reinforced for me that before we can address challenges in our communities, we must first understand them—and that these issues are deeply interconnected.

The CUDE experience also allowed me to strengthen my “people helping people” mindset, collaborate with a diverse group of leaders, and expand my credit union family.

Thank you for opening this door for me. I am committed to carrying this knowledge forward and paying it back through meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

CUDE lived up to the expectations and excitement shared by previous attendees! It is a great event put together to network with fellow credit union employees and to share/renew passion for the credit union purpose. Every detail is designed to promote credit union values and mission. I got to meet people who are new to the industry, and those who have been there their whole life. CUDE impacted each individual greatly and created memories that will last a lifetime.

I will always remember our community service day, spending the morning with Feeding Tampa Bay. Learning from the staff about the area's needs was impactful and realizing how much work a small group can complete in a couple of hours encouraged me to bring that mindset back to North Carolina. The ideas that were generated by new CUDE members to bring back to our own credit unions were inspirational. I am excited to see the impact of CUDE within my credit union and department, and I hope other co-workers get to experience this great event.

One of the last statements I heard during my week in DE summed up my experience the very best: “Once you know the difference credit unions make in the lives of their members, you can’t unknow it.” Suddenly everything clicked! My work with the Truliant Foundation doesn’t stand apart from the credit union’s mission. While the Foundation serves member communities through specific focus areas, including workforce education, social mobility, and financial literacy, ultimately our goal is the same goal as the larger credit union movement – financial wellbeing for everyone.

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to be as inspired as I was, but to share space with fifty other credit union professionals from across the country, learning from their experiences and hearing the passion they have for their own members, it’s impossible to walk away without believing in the credit union difference. Now I know and I can’t unknow it! I’m grateful to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and Truliant for sending me on this journey and look forward to seeing where I can plug in my DE training across Truliant member communities.

Connecting through the Carolinas CUDE Network

By earning their DE designations, the recent graduates join the Carolinas CUDE Network that consists of more than 150 active credit union professionals. The Carolinas CUDE Network hosts quarterly meetings to share general updates, plan service events, and raise funds for good causes. The group’s next service project will take place in June during the DE Day of Service, with the Annual Holiday Social coming in December to celebrate the holidays and support local charities.

DEs also have opportunities for volunteer engagement through events like the Development Issues Workshop scheduled for the spring, and the Principles & Philosophy Conference in October.

In partnership with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and GWLN’s Sister Societies in the Carolinas, the Inspire Across Continents webinar convened more than 200 global leaders, advocates, and changemakers from the Carolinas and across Africa for a dynamic virtual conversation.

Held on January 22, the virtual meeting was moderated by Lois Kitsch with CU Difference and Terri Hendrix with Carolinas Foothills, who joined together from Kenya, Africa. The event featured a panel of powerhouse credit union women from the Carolinas and the continent of Africa. Candid reflections centered on women’s leadership, with shared stories highlighting common challenges, the importance of mentorship, taking chances even when uncomfortable, and the need to never stop believing in oneself.

From Africa, Grace Watsiera and Kefilwe Masalila shared perspectives on navigating leadership roles in traditionally patriarchal environments, emphasizing the importance of authenticity, trust, and perseverance. Both advocated that women’s leadership is essential for fostering collaboration and community impact, while urging a collective effort to mentor and invest in the next generation.

Grace Watsiera serves as the Executive Director of the African Cooperative Development Foundation and Head of Programs and Business Development for ACCOSCA, the continental trade association for Africa’s credit union movement. Kefilwe Masalila serves as the CEO of the Botswana Savings and Credit Cooperative Association and is currently the only woman CEO of a trade association in Africa.

Their insights underscored Africa’s vast potential for gender equality, shattering stereotypes, breaking barriers, and fostering inclusive growth, particularly through women’s empowerment initiatives such as ACCOSCA’s Women of Influence program. A quote shared in the webinar chat captured the essential role women play in advancing sustainable progress through mentorship: “If you educate a man, you educate an individual; but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.”

Representing the U.S. credit union movement, Liz Ponder, President and CEO of SRP Federal Credit Union, and Leigh Brady, President and CEO of State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU), reflected on leadership journeys shaped by persistence, mentorship, and resilience in the face of setbacks. Both leaders shared that they were initially passed over for the CEO role when they first applied, experiences that ultimately strengthened their leadership journeys.

Liz Ponder discussed her professional journey, beginning as a teller and advancing to executive leadership, while stressing the importance of supporting others along their career paths. She reflected on the role of mentors, particularly men, in her development and emphasized the importance of self-care and intentional personal investment. Ponder noted that ceilings should not exist because leadership is rooted in purpose rather than title, and that influence can emerge from any level within an organization.

Leigh Brady reflected on her 38-year career at SECU, highlighting the critical role mentorship and resilience played in her path to leadership. She shared her experience of applying for the CEO position twice, facing rejection, and ultimately being appointed following the resignation of her predecessor. Leigh encouraged women to step outside their comfort zones and pursue their ambitions, regardless of obstacles.

Throughout the webinar, participants engaged in a robust chat, sharing appreciation for the panelists’ authenticity, vulnerability, and inspirational leadership stories.

Lois Kitsch also spotlighted Project Blossom, an initiative focused on expanding access to safe menstrual protection for girls in Africa, a critical investment in health, dignity, and education. Project Blossom has positively impacted more than 81,000 girls across five African countries and has helped hundreds remain in school.

Lauren Whaley, President and CEO of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, reported that more than $1,900 was donated by virtual participants in support of Project Blossom, with the Foundation matching those contributions. Proceeds from the $10 event registration fees were also donated to the initiative.

Through participant generosity, registration proceeds, and the Foundation’s matching commitment, meaningful support will be directed toward expanding educational access and opportunity for girls across Africa.

In 2025, the Foundation and its partner credit unions awarded an impressive $645,000 in scholarships to 311 credit union members. These scholarships are not only about financial support; they recognize academic excellence, leadership, community involvement, financial need, and the drive to overcome challenges. The program provides a vital resource for students and adults alike, enabling them to pursue undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate studies or make career changes through further education.

Foundation scholarships

Members of North and South Carolina credit unions are eligible to apply for Foundation scholarships. In 2025, the Foundation awarded $48,000 in scholarships to 36 credit union members based on academic and community achievements as well as financial need.

Scholarship opportunities for all

Members in all stages of their life and career journey can benefit from the Foundation’s scholarships! Scholarships are available for:

• Traditional students: High school seniors and current college students pursuing undergraduate degrees.
• Graduate and post-graduate students: Members advancing their education through master’s or doctoral programs.
• Adults making career changes: Individuals returning to school to pursue new professional opportunities.

Whether a member’s goal is to earn their first degree, advance their career, or make a fresh start, these scholarships can make a meaningful difference.

Application criteria

To qualify for a scholarship, applicants must:

• Possess a 3.0 GPA or above on a 4-point (non-weighted) scale.
• Be a member of a North or South Carolina credit union in good standing. (Memberships of parents or other immediate family members do not qualify.)
• Be enrolled or plan to be enrolled as a full-time student in the upcoming year.

The scholarship application portal link along with information and tips to assist members with their applications are available on the Foundation’s Scholarship Resource Center. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 1. We encourage all credit unions to share the Foundation’s Facebook post and promote the Foundation’s Scholarship Resource Center on social channels to help spread the word!

Final totals are in for the 21st Annual Carolinas Cup, and the support from Carolinas credit unions and industry partners once again delivered an unforgettable three days of impact, camaraderie, and friendly competition. Held October 5–7 at Grandover Resort & Spa, this year’s event raised an impressive $114,000, further strengthening the long-standing partnership between the credit union movement and Victory Junction. The addition of this year’s contributions on top of the 20^th Anniversary last year, brings the Carolinas Cup fundraising grand total to nearly $1.4 million raised for Victory Junction since the tournament began.

The annual tournament — a friendly rivalry between North Carolina and South Carolina — is organized by TruStage, with special recognition due to the many generous sponsors, auction contributors, and players, as well as the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and Carolinas Credit Union League. Each year, the Carolinas Cup reflects the collective generosity of credit unions across both states and their shared commitment to making a difference for children and families.

Two days of competitive golf were played across Grandover’s championship courses, led by Team South Carolina Captain Phil Barhill of Greenville Federal Credit Union and Team North Carolina Captain Frank DeDonato of Skyla Credit Union. In a thrilling and hard-fought finish, Team South Carolina pulled off an upset victory, capturing the Carolinas Cup championship and bringing the trophy home after several years of defeat.

As has become a cherished tradition, the Carolinas Cup experience extended beyond the golf course, offering participants meaningful opportunities to connect with the mission of Victory Junction. The evening before the first round, there was a special trip to Victory Junction where guests enjoyed a tour, camp activities and a camp-style meal complete with s'mores. Kyle Petty and a camper family joined the dinner and auction after the first round on the course, sharing with the attendees the impact and life-changing camping experience Victory Junction provides to families all over the country. Children can attend Victory Junction at no cost, due to the generous contributions and donations received each year.

Through the generosity of credit unions and industry partners, children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions can attend Victory Junction at no cost to their families, creating life-changing memories and moments of joy. The Carolinas Cup continues to exemplify the credit union philosophy of People Helping People. Year after year, credit unions from across the Carolinas come together not only to compete, but to give back — demonstrating that when cooperation and purpose unite, the impact extends far beyond the fairway.

The Foundation scores applications using a matrix that examines asset size and key financial ratios, with greater consideration given to those unable to tackle such improvements due to financial constraints. Furthermore, the Foundation also evaluates applications based on the quality of the project description and outcome as well as the addition of project budgets and financial projections. Ultimately, 10 credit unions were selected based on this comprehensive process.

“Small credit unions play an essential role in strengthening the cooperative movement. The Technology and Capital Improvement Grant Program is supported through direct donations from credit unions, system partners and individual donors to the Foundation’s Program Fund. Just recently, the Carolinas Credit Union League & Carrick Professionals announced a donation of $25,000, along with $10,000 from TruStage in support of the Program Fund. The Foundation is encouraging donations as it closes out the year to ensure sustainable funding for its academic and need-based scholarships, Community Grants and the Technology & Capital Improvement Grant Program.

“We know the challenges for small credit unions are many and at the Carolinas Credit Union League we are committed to helping them succeed,” shared President/CEO of CCUL Dan Schline. “The financial success of Carrick Professionals, our for-profit subsidiary, is what allows us to make contributions like this to support our small credit unions. We truly appreciate the work and partnership with the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and thank them for again delivering this important grant program for small credit unions in the Carolinas.”

Professional Development Grants

In addition to Technology and Capital Improvement Grants, the Foundation also supports small credit unions through the Hamilton Professional Development Grant program. For several years, Summit Credit Union has generously funded Hamilton Grants, and in 2024 renewed its support by committing an additional $100,000 to fund grants for the next several years.

In 2025, small credit unions received a total of $34,853 in grants for professional development events including INSPIRE, along with eight small credit unions that claimed free FiCEP registration. Credit unions also received an additional $5,000 in funding commitments for executive coaching from TalentGuided and loan process reviews by Performance Pro. To date, credit unions have received a total of $39,853.90 in 2025 funding commitments, which is a record annual total for the Hamilton Grant program.

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation is proud to announce the 2025 Hero Award honorees, which include remarkable individuals and organizations whose leadership, compassion, and service reflect the very heart of the credit union movement. These four honorees will be recognized at the Foundation’s annual Awards Gala on February 11, 2026, in Concord, North Carolina. Held in conjunction with the Carolinas Credit Union League’s LAUNCH Conference, the Awards Gala is the Foundation’s premier fundraising event, celebrating outstanding contributions that strengthen the credit union movement across the Carolinas.

The Foundation is excited to welcome back Creighton Blackwell, chief culture and impact officer at Coastal Credit Union, as emcee. He will guide the evening’s recognition of the Hero Award recipients along with the 30 credit union award winners previously announced. Together, these awardees represent the highest ideals of cooperation and service—reminding us that the people helping people philosophy does more than support our institutions; it transforms lives and builds thriving communities.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Sandy Milton, Chief Operating Officer, Piedmont Advantage Credit Union

The Foundation proudly honors Sandy Milton with the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing more than four decades of outstanding service to the credit union movement. Through nearly 29 years at Truliant Federal Credit Union and 12 years at Piedmont Advantage Credit Union, Sandy has consistently modeled leadership rooted in integrity, collaboration, and care. Her expertise in streamlining member services, marketing, and operations, paired with her commitment to training and mentoring future leaders has strengthened credit unions and the communities they serve. The Foundation celebrates Sandy’s enduring legacy of excellence and her profound impact on the Carolinas’ credit unions.

Advancing Equity Award

Southern Regional Chapter (SRC) of the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC)

The Southern Regional Chapter (SRC) of AACUC is the 2025 Advancing Equity Award recipient, recognized for its outstanding commitment to the 8th Cooperative Principle–Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Since its founding in 2018, SRC has become a beacon of progress, uniting credit union professionals across 10 southern states through transformative programs, courageous conversations, and a shared vision of inclusivity.

The Foundation also celebrates the leadership of the 2025 SRC Chapter Officers:

James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation & Summit Credit Union

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation proudly recognizes the James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation and Summit Credit Union as a 2025 Partner in Philanthropy Award recipient for their unwavering commitment to empowering small credit unions across the Carolinas. The Hamilton Professional Development Grant Fund, managed by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, was established by Summit Credit Union in honor of Elizabeth “Sis” Hamilton, a visionary leader who devoted seven decades to the credit union movement. Continuing her legacy of support to small credit unions, more than $230,000 has been committed to the Hamilton Fund for professional development grants, helping small credit unions strengthen leadership, training, and strategic capacity. Together, the James V. and Elizabeth N. Hamilton Foundation and Summit Credit Union exemplify the true spirit of people helping people and continue to advance the cooperative legacy Sis so passionately championed.

The Philanthropy Summit

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation proudly recognizes the Philanthropy Summit as a 2025 Partner in Philanthropy Award recipient for advancing collaboration and community leadership across North Carolina. The Philanthropy Summit was created to empower nonprofit leaders and strengthen partnerships among credit unions and other organizations committed to enhancing nonprofit effectiveness. Recognizing that small nonprofits often lacked access to quality development opportunities, this collaboration was born from a shared desire to equip them with the tools, connections, and resources needed to achieve long-term financial sustainability. Now in its fourth year, and led by the Coastal Credit Union Foundation, Civic Foundation, and SECU Foundation, the Philanthropy Summit has become a cornerstone event for learning, connection, and empowerment, exemplifying People Helping People and showing how cooperation and compassion can strengthen communities across the Carolinas.

“As we look ahead to celebrating all honorees at the Awards Gala during LAUNCH, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation extends our heartfelt congratulations to these heroes of our movement,” noted Foundation President Lauren Whaley. “Their dedication reminds us that when credit unions lead with heart, collaboration becomes the catalyst for creating lasting impact and stronger communities across the Carolinas."

Over the course of three transformative days, 49 attendees, 10 off-site volunteers, and 15 planning committee members gathered at the Caraway Conference Center for the 16th Principles & Philosophy (P&P) Conference, a flagship collaboration of the Carolinas Credit Union League and the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.

Planned and hosted by a volunteer group of Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs) from across North and South Carolina, the conference remains a premier opportunity to reconnect with the “why” of credit unions, a shared mission to serve working people with compassion, inclusion, and purpose.

“This framework around our understanding of credit union history also helps people understand credit unions’ emphasis on meeting the needs of working people today,” said Jeff Hardin, the Foundation’s director of collaborative programs and event coordinator.

A journey through purpose and people

Attendees began the week exploring the credit union movement’s history, tracing the roots of credit unions founded by mill workers, first responders, educators, and countless others seeking financial dignity. They engaged in sessions examining cooperative heroes, the Eight Cooperative Principles, and their continued relevance in serving members today.

On Tuesday evening, attendees visited Victory Junction, a place deeply connected to the Foundation’s mission. There, attendees toured the camp, learned about the impact of credit union philanthropy, and enjoyed a night of bowling, games, and s’mores—a joyful reminder of the power of community.

A highlight of the conference was the Missouri Community Action Network Poverty Simulation, where participants stepped into the lived experience of individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. This immersive session, coordinated by a team of dedicated volunteers, revealed the daily challenges faced by many in our communities and inspired meaningful reflection on empathy and action.

Off-site volunteers who made this experience possible included: Janie Bright, Angie Hayes & Lealand Sellers (Civic FCU), Melody Fisher & Aisha Everett (Carolinas Foundation), Sara Coats (Cooperative Council of the Carolinas), Heather Lyons & Amie Wheeler (Revity FCU), Scot May (Coastal CU), and Brooke Rouse (Carolinas League).

Facing the challenges ahead

Thursday’s sessions centered on the Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) report, which underscores the economic challenges faced by millions of working Carolinians. “This data is powerful because it reveals the scale of the challenges facing communities in the Carolinas,” noted Foundation’s President and CEO Lauren Whaley.

The conference concluded with a powerful presentation featuring Carolina Foothills Federal Credit Union. The credit union’s EVP/Chief Engagement Officer, Terri Hendrix, and Dr. Marquice Clark, a Carolina Foothills board member, shared how their partnership with the Cleveland Academy of Leadership is changing lives. In addition to his role at the credit union, Dr. Clark serves as principal at the school. To honor their transformational work, the Foundation presented a $1,000 gift to the Cleveland Opportunity Foundation, supporting students and families in need.

Collaboration in action

New in 2025, the Foundation proudly introduces the Disaster Response Champions Award, honoring credit unions that embody cooperation at its highest level when disaster strikes. This inaugural recognition celebrates four institutions for their swift, selfless, and compassionate response during Hurricane Helene, providing critical relief and hope to members, employees, and communities in their greatest time of need. Credit unions honored in this new category include Spero Financial FCU, State Employees' CU, SRP FCU and Truliant FCU

The Foundation will announce the Hero Award honorees in early November, recognizing individuals who exemplify extraordinary service and leadership within the credit union movement.

MADISON, Wis. – The National Credit Union Foundation (the Foundation) recently celebrated two graduating classes of the Credit Union Development Education™ (DE) program, with nine professionals from the Carolinas earning their designation as Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs).

Delivered through an immersive, week-long in-person experience, the DE program challenges participants to explore the credit union difference, financial well-being for all, and how cooperative principles can address development issues in their communities. Graduates join a global network of more than 3,300 CUDEs from 35 countries who have completed the U.S. program since its launch in 1982.

“Congratulations to the newest members of the DE family,” said Lauren Culp, executive director of the Foundation. “For 43 years, the Foundation’s Credit Union Development Education program has existed to inspire and educate credit union professionals around our collective ‘why’ as a movement. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of how the credit union system can leverage its cooperative difference and help build stronger communities.”

From the Carolinas, the following professionals completed the September 2025 DE Class:

Scholarships support Carolinas CUDEs

Thus far in 2025, a total of 16 credit union staff in North Carolina and South Carolina earned their CUDE certifications. Credit union engagement and support in the Carolinas is among the highest in the nation, reflecting the deep commitment to serving credit union members, support from the Carolinas Credit Union League and Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, and the robust activities and engagement of the Carolinas CUDE Network.

Several graduates benefited from the Development Educator Scholarship Fund, supported in part by annual earnings from the Principles & Philosophy Conference. The fund provides opportunities for credit union professionals in the Carolinas to attend DE training, whether in person or virtually. Scholarship recipients who attended training in 2025 include Cassandra Russell (REV FCU); Bethany Blanton and Lindy Howell (Skyla CU), and Travis Hall (South Carolina National Guard FCU).

The Carolinas Foundation recently announced DE scholarship selections last week for attendance in 2026. Awardees include Ashley Beach-Reid (African American CU Coalition), Josh Farmer (Mountain CU), and Sarah Johnson Blackwell (Truliant FCU).

Connecting through the Carolinas CUDE Network

The Carolinas CUDE Network hosts quarterly meetings to share general updates, plan service events, and raise funds for good causes. The group’s next service project will take place during its Holiday Social on December 18. Any Carolinas credit union staff with a CUDE designation are welcome to participate. During this year’s INSPIRE Conference hosted by the Carolinas Credit Union League and other partners, attendees united not only to grow as leaders but also to make a meaningful difference in their communities through acts of giving and service.

Three inspiring nonprofit organizations—The Period Project, Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council’s SheBiz, and Designed for Joy—were selected as beneficiaries of the Foundation’s INSPIRE giving initiative, each embodying the spirit of empowerment and compassion.

During the INSPIRE Boutique & Reception, attendees were offered a hands-on give-back project and a vibrant shopping experience where they could browse boutique-style booths featuring the Girl Scouts’ SheBiz program; handbags and accessories from Designed for Joy; and INSPIRE branded swag sponsored by Corporate Incentive Products, a local women-led organization.

Thanks to the generosity of INSPIRE attendees who donated and shopped with purpose, $3,797 was raised! The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation matched every dollar, doubling the total impact to $7,594. Each organization received a $2,532 grant to support its mission - restoring dignity, empowering young women, and creating pathways to sustainable employment.

The Period Project

More than 15,000 menstrual-care items were used for a give-back project where attendees assembled 1,000 Period Packs during the INSPIRE Opening Reception. As part of the registration process, attendees were able to make a small monetary donation allowing the Foundation to purchase these menstrual care items. The Period Packs were then distributed across Charlotte-Mecklenburg and South Carolina schools, ensuring students have access to essential supplies.

Together, we are breaking down barriers to period equity while amplifying the voices and needs of those we serve,” said Pamela Askew, Executive Director of The Period Project.

Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council’s SheBiz Program

Through SheBiz, young entrepreneurs showcased their talents and business ventures, transforming creativity and confidence into real-world business experience. Four student-led booths were featured at the INSPIRE Boutique, each offering a glimpse into the innovation and heart of the next generation of women leaders:

• Isabella Hartford – In HER Hands: A nonprofit organization supporting girls in foster care through personalized totes filled with essentials that nurture self-care, confidence, and dignity.
• Marley Whitaker – Heartfelt LipGloss: A natural beauty line focused on nourishing self-care, featuring all-natural shea butter glosses crafted to promote wellness and confidence.
• London & Lauren Reeves – LondonLauren Cosmetics: A luxury cosmetics brand offering high-quality glosses and lip pencils designed to enhance natural beauty and empower expression.
• Gabriella Marshall – Gabriella Delicious Treats: A bakery brand crafting homemade-style desserts—from cupcakes to cookies—that deliver sweetness and joy in every bite.

Each of these young business owners demonstrated creativity, professionalism, and purpose beyond their years, inspiring INSPIRE attendees with their talent and determination.

Designed for Joy

This Raleigh-based social enterprise provides women in crisis with immediate employment and a safe path toward stability. The grant and sales proceeds directly support their life-changing mission. The INSPIRE Boutique featured handbags and accessories made from Designed for Joy artisans.

“A huge thank you to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation for the generous support you’ve shown Designed for Joy in such a short time! From awarding us a grant to shopping our products at the conference, your impact is already being felt,” said Karen Woomer, board chair of Designed for Joy.

The power of shared compassion

INSPIRE 2025 was a vivid reminder that when people come together with purpose, remarkable things happen. Beyond the dollars raised, it was about restoring dignity, nurturing dreams, and creating brighter futures, proving once again that people helping people truly changes lives.

“We are deeply grateful to Cooperate Incentive Products for the INSPIRE Swag, the INSPIRE Committee and members of our Philanthropy Subcommittee who made connections to each of these nonprofits. Their thoughtfulness and dedication allowed us to create an experience where leadership and generosity came together to make a lasting difference,” noted Lauren Whaley, president of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.

The Carolinas CUDE Network Scholarship Committee of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation awarded a total of four scholarships in support of Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) training in 2026. Three recipients of CUDE Scholarships include Ashley Beach-Reid (African-American Credit Union Coalition), Josh Farmer (Mountain Credit Union) and Sarah Johnson Blackwell (Truliant Federal Credit Union). The awardees received a scholarship, valued at $3,100 per person, to cover the cost of attendance to one of the in-person or virtual DE trainings in 2026.

In addition, the Committee awarded an International Credit Union Development Educator (ICUDE) Scholarship to Lauren Whaley (Carolinas Credit Union Foundation). A new scholarship offering this year, ICUDE is designed to provide credit union employees and volunteers with a greater understanding of the international credit union system and opportunities for continued engagement. The International Credit Union Development Educator Designation is available to DE Program Alumni who meet a certain level of international experience and is offered in partnership with the International DE Programs.

CUDE and ICUDE scholarships are funded each year with fundraising efforts and proceeds from the Principles & Philosophy Conference, a jointly hosted event between the Carolinas League and Carolinas Foundation with DE volunteers. The Carolinas CUDE Network plans and hosts the conference each year, volunteering their time to support the teaching of credit union philosophy to credit union staff.

DE training, a flagship initiative of the National Credit Union Foundation, equips credit union professionals to identify and address development issues that hinder financial well-being. By fostering a deeper understanding of the credit union philosophy, CUDE graduates are empowered to make tangible differences in their communities.

“We offer congratulations to Ashley, Josh, Lauren and Sarah and know they will leverage the training they receive to serve others,” shared Jeff Hardin, the Foundation’s Director of Collaborative Projects. “The Foundation team also thanks the Scholarship Committee as well as the Carolinas CUDE Network for their volunteer commitment to valuable projects like the Principles & Philosophy Conference, scholarship selections, and other service projects through the year.”

Earlier this year, the Foundation refined its mission: to empower and inspire credit unions in the Carolinas through collaboration and philanthropic leadership. Foundation President Lauren Whaley said, “these upcoming deadlines reflect both the Foundation’s roots in philanthropy and its forward-looking focus on innovation and cooperation.”

“Every deadline we set, every program we launch, and every award we celebrate is about advancing the cooperative spirit of People Helping People,” Whaley said. “Whether we’re honoring the heroes of our movement or investing in the tools and resources that strengthen small credit unions, these efforts reflect the heart of our mission and the collective impact we can make together.”

The first opportunity comes on September 12, when applications close for the Technology and Capital Improvements Grant Program. Designed primarily for smaller credit unions, with preference for those under $50 million in assets, the program offers up to $15,000 per award to support projects such as technology or security upgrades, capital improvements, underserved outreach initiatives, or consulting services. Grant recipients will be announced after the Foundation’s November Board meeting.

Two weeks later, on September 26, the Foundation will accept its final nominations for the Hero Awards. Presented annually in four categories—Lifetime Achievement, Individual Achievement, Partner in Philanthropy, and Advancing Equity—the awards celebrate those making transformational contributions to the credit union movement. Winners will be honored at the Foundation’s Awards Gala set for February 11, 2026, held in conjunction with the League’s Launch Conference.

By pairing an investment in small credit unions with recognition of outstanding leaders, partners, and community impact projects, the Foundation continues to advance its mission while strengthening the cooperative system across the Carolinas.

The Foundation’s Technology and Capital Improvement Program was first launched in 2021 and was kickstarted by the generosity of the Carolinas Credit Union League and TruStage with a $50,000 donation. In 2023, the League followed up with a $75,000 donation. Support continues from credit unions and other supporters donating to our Programs Fund. Winners for the 2023 cycle are noted here with 11 credit unions selected to receive a record $130,282 in grant funds for 2024 projects and the 2022 cycle winners are here, with more than $80,000 awarded to nine small credit unions for projects completed in 2023.

“We have seen record growth by the Foundation in supporting small credit unions, not only through the tech grants but through professional development funding. Our small credit unions are the beating heart of our movement — often quietly doing extraordinary things with limited resources,” noted Whaley. “When we invest in their success, we’re not just strengthening a credit union — we’re helping our entire movement thrive.”

The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation has announced the winners of the 2025 INSPIRE Conference Scholarship, with categories for small credit unions (SMCUs) and emerging leaders, granting $25,000 in total awards to 25 credit union professionals across the Southeast.

All scholarship recipients will attend the 2025 INSPIRE Conference, a six-state collaborative event, taking place September 17–19 in Charlotte. The conference is designed for women leaders and their allies in the credit union movement, featuring keynote speakers, leadership development workshops, panel discussions, and valuable networking opportunities. INSPIRE will serve as a unique gathering place for professionals across the country to share ideas, build connections, and spark ideas and innovation across the industry.

Small credit union INSPIRE scholarships

The ten winners from credit unions with assets under $100 million have been selected for the INSPIRE scholarships. Each receives $1,000 to cover registration and lodging for the INSPIRE Conference.

This program is made possible through the generosity of Summit Credit Union and the Elizabeth N. and James V. Hamilton Fund, administered by the Foundation. The Hamilton Fund honors the extraordinary legacy of Elizabeth “Sis” Hamilton, who served as Manager and CEO of Summit Credit Union for 60 years and dedicated 70 years to its board of directors—the longest-serving credit union volunteer in U.S. history. Her dedication to small credit unions continues to inspire the advancement of professionals who make a difference in their members’ lives every day. The Sis Hamilton Fund underscores a lasting commitment to enabling small credit unions to grow and thrive.

Emerging leaders INSPIRE scholarships

The 15 winners from credit unions of all asset sizes have been named as recipients of the Emerging Leaders Scholarships, each receiving $1,000 toward conference registration and lodging. Applicants were required to submit a letter of recommendation from a supervisor, manager, or CEO for consideration.

Funding for this program is provided through the combined support of the Carolinas Credit Union League, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, and the Credit Union Impact Foundation. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to cultivating the next generation of leaders who will carry the credit union movement forward.

“These scholarships reflect more than just financial support—they are affirmations of leadership potential, resilience, and the cooperative spirit that defines credit unions in the Carolinas,” said Lauren Whaley, president of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. “We extend heartfelt gratitude to Summit Credit Union, the Sis Hamilton Fund, the Carolinas League and the Credit Union Impact Fund for empowering this next generation of women leaders and supporting our small credit unions. Through the generosity of Vizo Financial Corporate Credit Union,the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation awarded $50,000 in Vizo Financial Empowerment Grants last week. Nine credit unions received funding for financial education projects or programs to empower members to reach financial goals and establish a better quality of life. This year’s grants ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 per credit union.

“Our ultimate goal with the Empowerment Grants program is to give credit unions, through their state foundations, the power to make their financial literacy and community outreach initiatives a reality,” said Erin Doan, VP of administration for Vizo Financial. “As we see these ideas come to life, we’re reminded that the cooperative spirit is alive and well, and we’re grateful to the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation for being a beacon of support for credit unions looking to make a real difference in the lives of their members and communities.”

“Helping members move toward and ultimately achieve financial success is a key reason why credit unions exist, and we are so grateful for the partnership of Vizo Financial in this important endeavor,” Carolinas Credit Union Foundation President/CEO Lauren Whaley reflected.

This is the Foundation’s second year in providing Vizo Financial Empowerment Grants. 2024 grant recipients made meaningful contributions to financial wellness and empowerment in the past year. These accomplishments included the implementation of a new scholarship program, expanded Hispanic outreach, and helped one credit union create a first-time homebuyers education series.

The 2025 Vizo Financial Empowerment Grant winners include:

Acclaim Federal Credit Union

Acclaim received a $10,000 grant to support its efforts to foster a culture of saving among parents, particularly within underserved communities. Their goals are to promote long-term financial well-being, and to lay the foundation for future success for the children of these parents.

The credit union sought grant funding to provide the first $100 deposit for each child’s account in a high yield savings account. This effort is aimed at providing a powerful motivator for parents to open an account and take a tangible first step toward building healthy financial habits.

Carolina Foothills Federal Credit Union

Carolina Foothills is pairing its $10,000 financial empowerment grant with credit union funds to partner with Coopera, which will assess Carolina Foothills’ readiness to serve the Hispanic market. They will also research the Hispanic Market potential in the areas where the credit union operates. As part of the grant, Coopera will also perform a strategy session and train Carolina Foothills’ staff to implement the findings of their research.

Emergency Responders Credit Union

Emergency Responders Credit Union received $10,000 to launch “ERCU Connects NC”, a statewide digital outreach and financial literacy program specifically tailored for emergency responders. With a single physical branch in Winston-Salem but a membership charter that spans all of North Carolina, the credit union aims to bridge the accessibility gap by delivering video-based financial education and service awareness to rural and underserved first responders.

The project will increase financial literacy, promote responsible financial choices, reduce reliance on predatory lending, and strengthen long-term financial well-being among emergency professionals.

HealthShare Credit Union

In 2024, HealthShare CU partnered with Balance Financial to offer members a very comprehensive financial education program. Their members benefit from the 1:1 coaching BALANCE offers, plus other core financial education topics like managing debt, the pathway to homeownership course (HUD approved), webinars, podcasts, retirement information, student loans, credit card, credit report reviews, and much more in online support tools. The credit union received $1,000 in grant support to continue this robust partnership in the year ahead.

Mid Carolina Credit Union

Mid Carolina received an $8,000 Financial Empowerment Grant to kick start its ambitious new youth platform.  Like many credit unions, Mid Carolina has noticed a need to decrease its average member age. The credit union believes implementing an attractive youth program is an important step in achieving this goal.

The credit union’s new youth program and plan centers on its new mascot, Ben Franklin. Mid Carolina recently had its company vehicle wrapped with a picture of Ben Franklin wearing sunglasses surrounded by floating $100 dollar bills. A new suite of "Revolutionary Youth Accounts" will include a "Founding" Savings account, an "Independence" Checking account, and a "Lightning Rod" certificate. All of the product names are centered around Ben's creations or his involvement in American History. The credit union will incorporate Banzai Financial Education that caters to young people starting on their financial journey.

Revity Federal Credit Union

Revity received $4,000 in Vizo Financial Empowerment Grants funds to purchase the BALANCED Life Reality Fair, Retirement Experience, & Classroom Simulation for community partner & SEG events. These products are offered by the Foundation through its partnership with the Cornerstone Foundation. These simulations cover retirement issues and budgeting, as well as helping young people understand what it is like to have a job and pay your own way in life.

SPC Credit Union

SPC is the first credit union in South Carolina to enter into an agreement with Greenlight Debit for Kids. Credit union staff believe that the key to financial wellness is to provide tools and education while a child is still at home with parents and guardians to guide.  Greenlight provides not only real-life financial experience, but it is designed to teach and reward students who complete financial education courses.  The $5,000 in support from Vizo will help SPC offset a significant investment to deliver a worthwhile impact.   This grant will also help intensify the credit union’s marketing and communication opportunities for their members and greater communities.

Summit Credit Union

Summit launched the Taste of Reality Fair initiative in 2019. As part of the program, Summit invests in the Bite of Reality app. By using the mobile app, youth are given a simulation of a month in the financial life of an adult. Participants are assigned a job, income, credit score, spouse, and child as they navigate through eight merchant booths representing various monthly expenses like housing, car payments, groceries, and lifestyle preferences. Every purchase is deducted from a virtual checking account within the app. To mimic real-life twists, the app incorporates the "Fickle Finger of Fate," introducing random lucky bonuses or unexpected expenses. The $1,000 in grant funding will help offset the yearly licensing fee for the mobile app.

TCP Credit Union

TCP received $1,000 in grant funding to assist with the training of staff members. With two new staff members who are just getting started in the credit union world, this support allows TCP to provide valuable training, attend conferences, and grow in ways that benefit both its team and the community we serve.

As a win-win outcome to the grant request, Foundation staff were able to identify other funding sources offered through the Hamilton Professional Development Grants program. These connections helped to cover just about all of the training requests the credit union made.

Most notably, several upcoming deadlines are noted for awards, events and grant & scholarship opportunities from the Foundation.

Nominations are now open for the Foundation’s 2024-2025 Credit Union Awards, including the Desjardins, Maxwell, and Herring Awards, as well as the Foundation’s signature Hero Awards: Lifetime Achievement, Individual Achievement, Partner in Philanthropy, and Advancing Equity. Small credit unions in the Carolinas can now apply for grants to support much-needed technology upgrades and capital improvements, with $100,000 available from the Foundation. The Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and TruStage are thrilled to announce the return of the Carolinas Cup Golf Championship & Auction, taking place October 5–7, 2025, at the beautiful Grandover Resort & Spa in Greensboro, North Carolina. Now in its 21st year, the Carolinas Cup continues its tradition of bringing together credit union professionals from across North and South Carolina for a weekend of competitive golf, networking, and charitable giving.

This year’s event will once again benefit Victory Junction, a year-round camp facility providing life-changing experiences for children with serious illnesses and chronic medical conditions at no cost to their families. The camp operates solely on generous contributions and donations.

Over the last 21 years, the Carolinas Cup has raised nearly $1.3 million to benefit Victory Junction, topping the more than $4 million raised through that same period by the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation. 

This year’s captains include Greenville FCU CFO Phil Barhill of South Carolina and Skyla CU VP of Financial Solutions Frank DeDonato of North Carolina. Team NC is the current Carolinas Cup champion, having defended their multi-year standing at the 20th Annual Carolinas Cup, where more than $82,000 was raised for Victory Junction. 

The weekend begins on Sunday, October 5, with an optional practice round for those eager to warm up their swing, followed by an evening visit to Victory Junction for dinner, a tour and camp activities. The tournament officially kicks off on Monday, October 6, with a shotgun start and a full day of golf, camaraderie, and competition. The evening will feature a lively dinner and live auction, with exciting items up for bid—all in support of Victory Junction’s life-changing work. The event wraps up on Tuesday, October 7, with a final round of golf, closing luncheon, and an awards ceremony to celebrate the winning teams and sponsors.

Registration is open now, with individual golfer packages priced at $800, which includes two days of golf, meals, entertainment, and hospitality. For those who wish to join but not participate in the golf tournament, there are flexible options including a $250 package for volunteers or spouses and a $200 ticket for the auction and dinner only.

There are also a variety of sponsorship opportunities available for credit unions and business partners looking to increase their visibility while supporting a great cause. Sponsorship levels range from the $8,000 VIP Camper package, which includes golf for four, VIP perks and exclusive recognition, to the $1,500 Adventure Seeker level.

Among the Foundation awardees is Maryanna Dawkins, a member of Carolina Foothills FCU. The 2025 Opportunity Scholarship awardee is completing her industrial engineering degree studies this fall. Maryanna is committed to increasing workplace safety by improving ergonomic processes at manufacturing companies.

She joins Social Responsibility Scholarship awardee Matthew Snow (SECU), an aspiring firefighter/paramedic, plus Kendall Brown (Palmetto Citizens FCU) and Zaneya Roberson (Self-Help CU), the $5,000 HBCU Scholarship awardees for North Carolina and South Carolina. Brown (Claflin University) and Roberson (Fayetteville State University) actively mentor incoming freshman at the schools as they make the transition to college life.

“It’s an honor to support the educational goals of Kendall, Maryanna, Matthew and Zaneya, four young people who have a heart for giving back to their communities. Congratulations to all our awardees in the Carolinas,” said Whaley.

The scholarship program administered by the Foundation continues to grow as credit unions recognize the importance of supporting the educational needs of young members. The $645,000 in awards by the Foundation and its credit union partners funded more than 300 scholarships to members attending schools across the US. Whaley also reminds credit unions considering a scholarship program that the Foundation offers a turn-key, customizable program at a very low cost.

Last week, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation proudly leaned into the cooperative principles that define the credit union movement, Cooperation Among Cooperatives (P6) and Concern for Community (P7), with a powerful Give-Back Project supporting Western North Carolina’s recovery from Hurricane Helene.

In partnership with MANNA FoodBank, a nonprofit hunger relief organization serving 16 counties across Western NC, twelve credit unions and industry partners came together in a two-day service effort that embodied the heart of the credit union mission.

MANNA FoodBank, a member of the Feeding America network, plays a vital role in linking the food industry to more than 200 partner agencies, ensuring that families facing food insecurity get the support and resources they need.

A collective impact was a testament to what’s possible when credit unions collaborate for a cause:

• 570+ pounds of canned goods and pantry staples were donated from participants of the Carolinas Credit Union League’s Annual Meeting.
• 60 volunteer shifts filled by Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs) and credit union professionals
• 9,100 pounds of dried black beans were bagged
• 4,032 pounds of fresh cucumbers were cleaned and sorted

Together, volunteers helped move thousands of pounds of food into the hands of families who need it most.

The two-day give back was held over the National Credit Union Foundation’s DE Day of Service on June 11. This designated day is a way for DE alumni to transform their CUDE training and its teachings into community service to empower credit union members and strengthen communities. The Carolinas Foundation is an ambassador for the Carolinas CUDE Network , who works cooperatively to raise awareness of the social purpose of credit unions between the two states.

Scholarships available for those with a heart for service 

For credit union professionals focused on social purpose and community impact, the Carolinas Foundation has opened its scholarship cycle through August 15 for  Credit Union Development Education (CUDE) and International CUDE (ICUDE) designations. Funded by proceeds from the annual Principles & Philosophy Conference, these scholarships are offered through a partnership between the Carolinas CUDE Network, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, and the Carolinas Credit Union League.

CUDE and ICUDE programs provide transformative learning experiences that deepen participants' understanding of cooperative principles and development issues—both nationally and globally.
