Credit union professionals from across the Carolinas gathered in Concord, N.C., Feb. 10-11 for LAUNCH 2026, marking 10 years of advancing innovation, leadership development and strategic collaboration within the credit union movement.

This year’s theme, Charting the Future: The Next Decade Starts Here, highlighted forward-thinking strategies, emerging technologies and evolving member needs as credit unions prepare for the future of financial services.

The two-day conference welcomed over 220 attendees from a variety of departments and experience levels, offering educational sessions, networking opportunities, industry collaboration, the CUxEL Protégé Competition Finals, and the Carolinas Credit Union
    Foundation Awards Gala.

Building connections and strengthening industry collaboration

The conference opened with the CCUL Networks Meeting, “Stronger Together: Maximizing the Power of Your CCUL Professional Network,” led by Bill Nagle of AngleUp Consulting. The session emphasized the importance of collaboration, peer learning, and relationship-building
    across functional credit union roles.

During the Credit Union Roundtable, Caroline Vahrenkamp of the Filene Research Institute provided insight into strategic priorities shaping credit unions in 2026 and the role of true innovation in driving growth.

“Innovation is not about technology. It’s about the ability to think creatively and act fast,” Vahrenkamp said. Vahrenkamp also encouraged credit unions to embrace adaptability while maintaining long-term strategic focus.

“Credit unions that perform the best are the ones that stick to their strategic plan but add into your plan room to adapt and innovate,” she said.

The Emerging Leaders’ Workshop focused on professional growth, purpose-driven leadership and career development. Led by America’s Credit Unions’ Sedric Brinson and Talent Retention Expert Dr. Troy Hall, participants engaged in interactive exercises designed
to strengthen leadership confidence and self-awareness.

Dr. Troy’s “three-of-a-kind” connection activity asked them to identify the things they had in common – a simple prompt that sparked memorable conversations. “No one is perfect,” said Taysha Gosnell of South Carolina Federal Credit Union, capturing the
takeaway that even across diverse roles and experiences, shared connections come through.

Addressing emerging risks and industry transformation

Educational sessions throughout the conference explored emerging risks, fraud prevention strategies, artificial intelligence, lending innovation, and cybersecurity preparedness. Discussions highlighted the increasing importance of strategic risk management
and proactive leadership as credit unions navigate a rapidly evolving financial landscape.

Sessions such as “Layered Defense: The Smarter Way to Stop the Next Fraud Wave” and “The Crisis of Strategic Thinking in Management” provided practical tools and industry data to help credit unions strengthen operational resilience and leadership pipelines.

Additional sessions examined the growing role of artificial intelligence in lending, operations and member service, while also addressing governance, compliance and security considerations tied to AI adoption.

    member experience.

Sprint Sessions offered quick, focused learning opportunities covering topics such as data-driven lending strategies, automation, cybersecurity readiness, and member experience optimization.

Carolinas. And this program has shown time and time again that graduates from this program elevate their careers and do amazing things, and I know that this class will do the same thing.”

The graduation ceremony, held on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in Chapel Hill, NC, featured several highlights, including:

Keynote addresses from CCUL President and CEO Dan Schline and Center for Leadership Studies Master Trainer Jono Darville.

Inspiring and reflective remarks came from elected class representatives Toya Reid of Skyla Credit Union and Jonathan Jernigan of State Employees’ Credit Union, who shared how the program shaped their personal and professional growth.
“My time with LDI has truly been amazing,” Reid said. “This experience changed me by teaching me how to pause, reflect, and approach situations with more awareness. This group has become a safe space for me, professionally and personally.” Jernigan
added, “It’s up to us to apply what we’ve learned here to give opportunities, invest in the next generation, and ensure the credit union mission remains strong for years to come.”

A heartfelt moment of remembrance honored two leaders who died this year: Jill Lackey, a past instructor and longtime coach for the LDI program, and Nicole Martinetti, a 2016 LDI graduate and Spero Financial employee. Brian McKay, CEO
of Spero Financial, led a moment of silence to recognize their legacy and lasting contributions to the credit union movement. “Both of them were absolute champions of LDI," shared McKay. "Jill was in the very first faculty and continued in that capacity for about
five years, then continued to coach for the full 10 years of the program. I think she was one of those who really embraced the relationships she could develop with people. Nicole and I enrolled in LDI together in the very first class. We’re from
Greenville, South Carolina, so on a good day it’s about a four-hour drive…and she would talk my ear off the entire way home about all the things she learned. I really think LDI changed her career path. The fire she got from JD, Lauren, Jill and
others she carried through until just this year.”

One student from each cohort was selected to receive this year’s Heart of Service Award. This year’s recipients are Sherry Gunter, left, and April Young, right.

During the ceremony, the League also honored the recipients of its 2025 Eric Stiff Heart of Service Award: Sherry Gunter of Palmetto Citizens FCU and April Young of Piedmont Advantage Credit Union. This annual award,
named in honor of the late Eric Stiff, recognizes graduating students who exemplify dedication to their organizations, communities, and the credit union movement. The recognition includes a $2,000 educational scholarship through the Heart of Service Eric Stiff Memorial Scholarship Fund, which the recipient(s) can use toward any development opportunities within the credit union industry.

Since its inception, the Leadership Development Institute has equipped students with the tools and skills to lead with empathy, emotional intelligence, and strategic vision. Participants engage in a thorough curriculum that includes situational leadership,
talent management, and one-on-one coaching with certified professionals.

“We have our why, we have our credit union philosophy and cooperative principles, and now we hope we’ve given you some additional tools for your toolbox,” Schline said in his well wishes to the graduates. “As you move forward, [know] you’re well equipped.
Each of the CEOs and supervisors in this room has invested in your success through LDI, and they’re looking forward to seeing what you achieve for your credit union and your members.”

As LDI continues to grow and evolve, it remains a cornerstone of leadership development in the Carolinas’ credit union movement. To learn more about the program, which opens every August for applications, and view more news and media highlights from the graduation ceremony, visit

LDI facilitator spotlight: JD McPherson on developing the leaders of tomorrow

JD McPherson

Since its inception in 2016, the Carolinas Credit Union League’s Leadership Development Institute (LDI) has equipped more than 190 credit union professionals with practical tools and insight to grow as leaders.
At the center of that journey is JD McPherson, senior consultant and master trainer at the Center for Leadership Studies (CLS), whose approachable style and hands-on teaching have become a hallmark of the LDI program. In a recent interview, JD shared
what makes LDI so effective and why leadership development matters more than ever.

What sets LDI apart

According to JD, what distinguishes LDI is its intentional structure and focus on building leadership skills over time. “I believe that it is the intentionality of the program. When the program was developed, Lauren [DeAngelis] wanted to have it
built on the foundation of Situational Leadership. After establishing the foundation in quarter one, the following quarters are designed to build on that foundation,” he said.

LDI also balances CLS’ foundational leadership concepts with emerging challenges leaders face today—like hybrid work, generational shifts, and organizational alignment. The small-cohort format encourages trust and connection, helping participants create
lasting professional relationships across the credit union space.

“I believe that leadership development is the most under-utilized ‘force multiplier’ in business, and it doesn’t happen by accident.”

- McPherson

Evolving leadership needs (why it matters)

Today’s leaders need more than technical skills; they need to communicate across generations, manage change, and lead with empathy. JD says the LDI curriculum meets this moment by blending timeless principles with timely strategies. “The pace of change,
managing an ever-expanding virtual workforce, and having to accomplish more with fewer human resources are some of the top challenges facing leaders today. LDI takes a multi-faceted approach, developing not only individual leadership characteristics
with many instructor-led classes, but the cohort mentality builds lifelong professional relationships within the credit union space,” he explained.

The program also provides space for reflection and peer-to-peer learning, something often missing in fast-paced environments.

McPherson facilitates the second quarter session in 2025, bringing together all the principles and skills of CLS’ Situational Leadership model.

Top takeaways from the program

Participants often walk away from LDI with increased self-awareness, stronger communication skills, and a broader view of leadership. JD points to a common breakthrough moment: “The moment that the participants understand that we evaluate performance
situation by situation and not just assume any one individual performs all tasks equally.”

He also loves seeing the connections participants make throughout the year: “I love to see the connections between learning something new in the third quarter and connecting it to material from quarters one and two. Additionally, it is amazing to watch
the relationships develop between leaders from different credit unions over the year. Participants that were quiet and reserved in quarter one are interacting with their peers and developing new relationships throughout the year.”

“Adopting a purposeful development strategy for the different levels of leadership is an upfront investment that will pay remarkable returns in the future.”

- McPherson

The future calls (how will you answer?)

As credit unions look ahead to the challenges of tomorrow, JD encourages leaders to make development a priority—not just for executives, but across all levels. “I believe that leadership development is the most under-utilized ‘force multiplier’ in business,
and it doesn’t happen by accident. Adopting a purposeful development strategy for the different levels of leadership is an upfront investment that will pay remarkable returns in the future,” he said.

For those considering applying to LDI, JD offers this guidance:

Commit to the effort it will require during the year.

Go all in from the beginning, integrating yourself into the cohort and forging new relationships.

Dedicate time “in-between” the onsite sessions developing the competencies learned.

Have fun!

The Carolinas Credit Union League proudly celebrates the newest class of professionals who have earned their Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC) designation through the Enhanced Financial Counseling Certification Program (FiCEP). Eighteen
credit union employees from across the Carolinas successfully completed the program and testing, joining a growing network of counselors dedicated to improving members’ financial wellness.

Through a unique partnership between the Carolinas Credit Union League, the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, Luminate Louisiana Credit Unions, and America’s Credit Unions, the Enhanced FiCEP program offers credit union staff a five-month training experience
combining self-paced study, recorded tutorials, and newly implemented two-part guided study sessions. Participants gain essential skills to help members manage their finances more effectively, ultimately strengthening both member relationships and
    the credit union’s bottom line.

Empowering access to financial education

With support from the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation, the League provides the program at a reduced cost of $695—a savings of $350. The Hamilton Grant further extends access by covering
full registration for one participant per credit union under $100 million in assets. This collaboration ensures that credit unions of all sizes can invest in staff who guide members toward financial stability.

“Allie Yearby, professional development coordinator for the Carolinas Credit Union League, emphasized the importance of these achievements. “Financial wellness is a cornerstone of the credit union mission, and it’s always a proud moment to see more certified
counselors ready to guide their members toward financial freedom,” she said.

Celebrating the 2025 FiCEP graduates

The League congratulates the following 2025 FiCEP graduates:
Megan Boyd Galloway, TCP Credit Union; Carletta Cuff, Revity Federal Credit Union; Kimberly Kennedy, Palmetto First Federal Credit Union; Amanda Fisher, Santee Cooper Credit Union; Emily LaMay, Crystal Hastings, and Jessica Godinez, Acclaim Federal Credit Union; Misty Dunahoe, Bridgette Williams, and Max Jones, Berkeley Community Federal Credit Union; Karen Bristow, Revity Federal Credit Union; Amanda Parrish, Carolyn Stoddard, and Michael O’Briant, Truliant Federal Credit Union; Cassandra Russell, REV Federal Credit Union; Scott Armstrong, ElecTel Cooperative Federal Credit Union; Heather Neal, SC National Guard Federal Credit Union; and Becki Guy, CPM Federal Credit Union.

financial decisions—and I aim to be a refreshing source of understanding and encouragement when someone is ready to learn more about managing their finances.”

Registration for the next FiCEP session opens in January, with the program running from May through October. Credit unions interested in enrolling staff can learn more at carolinasleague.org/ficep.

As the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) celebrates a decade of shaping credit union leaders, the program continues to make an impact across the Carolinas. In this follow-up to our earlier feature, Greenville Federal Credit Union and Members Credit Union share how LDI has strengthened their teams and shaped leadership development in their organizations.

Why they joined

Participating in LDI early on, both credit unions recognized the importance of investing in their emerging leaders.

Greenville FCU shared their motivation: "We recognized the importance of investing in the long-term growth of our leaders," said Kaitlin Grooms, vice president of HR and development. "This program also offered the added benefit of expanding our leadership
team’s professional network within the credit union community."

Members CU also saw the value in sending key emerging leaders to the program. "As I was building out my management team when I became CEO, I sent Eric Stiff to be part of the first LDI class," said Bob Donley, CEO of Members CU. "It was a great experience
for Eric, and it paid huge dividends to our credit union." Stiff, who passed away in 2022 after a brief battle with acute myeloid leukemia, is remembered through the Eric Stiff Heart of Service Award and Memorial Scholarship,
which has honored outstanding LDI graduates for the past two years.

Their LDI experience

Leaders from both credit unions found the program exceeded their expectations. Members CU saw LDI as a way to build a strong leadership foundation. "LDI surpassed my expectations so much, we could not have asked for a more impactful start to our journey,"
    Donley said.

Greenville FCU emphasized the practical tools and strategic thinking LDI fostered. "We expected our leaders to be challenged to think differently—with greater intention—and the program consistently met and often exceeded those expectations," Grooms explained.

Influence on leadership and culture

LDI helped both credit unions reinforce their culture and leadership practices. "LDI allowed the reinforcement of what we were doing with our culture and helped us cement our ‘Why’ not only in leadership, but throughout the entire credit union," Donley
    noted.

For Greenville FCU, the program strengthened alignment with mission and values, enhancing employee coaching, retention, and innovation. "Our leadership team has a deeper appreciation for the role culture plays in everything we do," Grooms said.

Long-term effects

Both credit unions highlighted lasting benefits for graduates. Members CU leaders gained confidence, broader conceptual thinking, and insights into effective leadership. "LDI has provided many things to our graduates: understanding what is and is not
a good leader, how to lead and how not to lead," Donley explained.

Greenville FCU shared retention and career growth outcomes. "Ninety percent of the leaders who’ve completed LDI have stayed with our credit union, and several have been promoted into higher roles," Grooms noted.

Advice for other credit unions

Both credit unions encourage investing in leadership development. "Do what it takes to find the time and money to invest in your leadership team and send them to LDI," Donley said. "It will pay you and your credit union back many times over."

Grooms added, "Develop a strategy to prioritize who you are going to send to LDI and plan it out."

Looking back over a decade

Reflecting on LDI’s first 10 years, both credit unions shared pride in being part of the program’s foundation. "It has been so cool to be a part of something that started with the promise of such potential and see it succeed beyond what any of us could
    have imagined," Donley said.

Grooms echoed that sentiment: "It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re proud to have been part of the foundation—helping shape and celebrate the LDI program from the very start."
