Raleigh, N.C. – The SECU Foundation has announced phase two of its disaster relief efforts, approving an additional $1.75 million in grants to support communities in Western North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene. This funding builds upon the Foundation’s initial $3.75 million relief package from October, furthering its commitment to providing critical aid to those impacted by the storm.

The grants will focus on addressing temporary housing needs, financial crises, and food insecurity in the hardest-hit areas. The funds will be distributed to three organizations:

  • Baptists on Mission: $1 million to support the Essential Rapid Repairs program.
  • The Salvation Army of the Carolinas: $500,000 to expand capacity and provide financial aid for families working toward recovery.
  • MANNA Food Bank: $250,000 for a six-month produce distribution pilot program starting in December 2024 to enhance access to fresh fruits and vegetables in impacted communities.

Chris Ayers, chair of the SECU Foundation Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “As a native of Western North Carolina, I know many continue to struggle with recovering from Hurricane Helene, and I am grateful for SECU Foundation’s additional support for the people of this region,” said Ayers. “Through these grants, we are living out our philosophy of People Helping People® by helping to lift those in need and bringing us closer together. As a credit union family, we are committed to helping our fellow North Carolinians.”

SECU Foundation Executive Director Jama Campbell echoed these sentiments, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the region. “As we travel through Western North Carolina, it’s heartbreaking to see the devastation that remains in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene,” said Campbell. “We are compelled to do more to help those deeply affected by this tragedy – our neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers. The organizations that are receiving funding provide critical resources and serve as lifelines for North Carolinians, and we are thankful for their dedicated efforts to assist those who need help putting their lives back together.”

The SECU Foundation’s phase two funding underscores its dedication to supporting recovery and rebuilding efforts in Western North Carolina, reaffirming its mission of People Helping People®.
